The nose is a problem area for so many patients we see every day. And so many of our patients struggle with a wide nose. That’s where a wide nose rhinoplasty comes in. With this unique nasal procedure, Dr. Gilpin and his team will give you the balanced facial proportions and facial features you deserve.

What is a Wide Nose Rhinoplasty?

A wide nose rhinoplasty (often called wide nasal bone reduction or alar base reduction) is a facial plastic surgery procedure designed to narrow a wider nose. The “nose job” typically involves breaking the upper nasal bones to narrow the nasal bridge and restructuring or removing cartilage from the bulbous nasal tip. By changing the bone structure, Dr. Gilpin can rearrange the nasal anatomy and reduce the width of your nose overall to give you a sleeker and more aesthetically-pleasing appearance.

There are generally three different types of wide nose rhinoplasty: open, closed, and bulbous nose rhinoplasty. The type of surgery that’s right for you will depend on the size of your nose, the extent of the procedure needed, and whether your nose is wider at the bridge or the tip.

Ideal Candidates for a Wide Nose Rhinoplasty

While anyone with a wider nose who is looking for a narrower nasal appearance is a good candidate for a wide nose rhinoplasty, there are some criteria we follow to ensure this is the right procedure for you. You should be in good overall health, have realistic expectations of the treatment, be a nonsmoker, and not have any medical conditions that could negatively affect the healing process. Ideal candidates may also struggle with breathing properly or a deviated septum.

Wide Nose Rhinoplasty Pre Op Recommendations

Before your wide nose rhinoplasty, there are a few steps you’ll want to take to ensure you’re ready for the procedure. You’ll want to quit smoking if you’re a smoker, avoid alcohol use, stop taking certain medications like blood thinners, stick to a healthy lifestyle, and limit your sun exposure.

Dr. Gilpin will give you a detailed list of pre-op instructions that you’ll want to follow.

Wide Nose Rhinoplasty Procedures

What occurs during your wide nose rhinoplasty can depend on what changes need to be made and the results you’re looking for.

For an open wide nose rhinoplasty, Dr. Gilpin will make an incision between your nostrils, pull back the skin, and restructure the nose from there. This is the best option for those looking for major restructuring. It gives Dr. Giplin better access to your nasal bones so he can change the bone structure directly.

For a closed rhinoplasty, all the incisions will be made inside the nostrils. This procedure is best for patients looking for subtler results, needing to reduce a bulbous tip, and for those who are worried about scarring.

How long your procedure takes will depend on the type of rhinoplasty, the extent of the procedure, and the outcome you’re looking for.

Results and Recovery for a Wide Nose Rhinoplasty

After your wide nose rhinoplasty, you will experience redness, swelling, bruising, and some discomfort. Dr. Gilpin will prescribe pain relievers to ensure you can have a smooth recovery process. For the first couple of weeks of recovery, you’ll want to rest as much as possible. We typically recommend you take 1-2 weeks off work. During this time, you will want to avoid smoking, alcohol use, and lying on your side or stomach. You don’t want to put any pressure on your nose. You’ll also want to avoid coughing or sneezing, if possible, and stick to a well-balanced meal with plenty of water.

As for results, you may see some changes immediately, but the swelling and bruising will hide most of your results. You will see some initial results after the first couple of weeks, but it can take up to a year for all residual swelling to dissipate and for the final results to be fully visible.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is nose job permanent?

A well-performed rhinoplasty by a facial plastic surgeon is expected to be permanent. However, the younger you are when having rhinoplasty, there is a small but increased chance of your nose changing shape with age.

CAN I WEAR GLASSES AFTER MY NOSE SURGERY?

Patients who wear contact lenses can resume wearing contacts immediately after nose surgery; however, patients who wear glasses will need to take extra precaution. If you need to wear glasses during the first four-to-six weeks after nose surgery, it's recommended that you either tape your glasses to your forehead or buy a special device that allows the glasses to rest on your cheeks instead of your nose. These devices are commonly used by patients after rhinoplasty.

Why do nose jobs collapse?

Rhinoplasties collapse when they are performed in such a way that eliminates the underlying structure of nasal bone and supportive tissue. Over time, the skin above this structure sags and changes the appearance of the nose.

WHEN WILL THE STITCHES BE REMOVED AFTER RHINOPLASTY?

Stitches are typically removed six or seven days after nose surgery.

WHEN CAN I EXPECT TO SEE RESULTS FROM NOSE SURGERY?

You will probably notice an immediate improvement in the appearance of your nose, but the final results will become more evident as swelling goes down over the coming weeks and months after your procedure. It may take up to a year for the final results of your rhinoplasty to become apparent. It's normal to feel a bit anxious to see the full results, but keep in mind that your body needs time to fully heal. Every day your swelling will subside, allowing you to adjust to your newly sculpted nose.

WHERE WILL MY RHINOPLASTY IN NASHVILLE BE PERFORMED?

Dr. Gilpin's procedures are typically performed at the Cool Springs Surgery Center, which is a fully accredited, state-of-the-art surgical center conveniently located in Nashville, TN.

WILL I BE ABLE TO GO HOME AFTER MY NOSE SURGERY IS COMPLETE?

Yes, after your nose surgery is complete you will be able to go home. Rhinoplasty is usually performed on an outpatient basis. As a caveat, you will still be under the effects of anesthesia after surgery, so you will need a responsible adult to drive you home afterwards. Also, you might want to consider arranging for someone to help you out for a day or two after surgery. This will allow you to relax and maximize your recovery time from rhinoplasty.

DOES RHINOPLASTY LEAVE NOTICEABLE SCARS?

Your rhinoplasty scars will be virtually undetectable. The incision is made across the columella, which is the bridge of skin and tissue between the nostrils. The remainder of the incisions are all made inside of the nose.u00a0At the conclusion of the nose surgery, Dr. Gilpin meticulously closes the columellar incision with fine sutures, which leaves almost no trace of the incision.

WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE COMPLICATIONS FROM RHINOPLASTY?

Complications from rhinoplasty are rare, especially when performed by a board-certified surgeon on appropriately selected candidates. However, as with any surgery, risks are still possible. General complications after rhinoplasty include adverse reaction to anesthesia, poor healing, nosebleed, and infection.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO RECOVER FROM RHINOPLASTY? WILL I BE IN PAIN AFTERWARDS?

Most of Dr. Gilpin's Nashville nose surgery patients report minimal pain after the procedure, and the most common concern is nasal congestion and “stuffiness” because of post-operative swelling and bruising. Patients will need about one week of downtime to recover from rhinoplasty surgery. During this time, it's important to be very gentle with your nose when washing your face or applying cosmetics. After the first five-to-seven days, people can usually return to work and resume their regular daily activities. However, strenuous exercise should be avoided until Dr. Gilpin determines that your nose has healed properly. Dr. Gilpin's follow-up schedule includes an appointment four days after surgery, then one week, two weeks, six months, and one year. At your first follow-up appointments, he can make sure you're healing optimally and clear you for physical activity, when appropriate. In the case of non-surgical rhinoplasty, downtime is very minimal. Patients might experience minor swelling or bruising, but this typically doesn't last more than a day and can usually be covered by makeup.

Is it better to go to an ENT or plastic surgeon for rhinoplasty?

It depends on your goals. An ENT surgeon may be ideal if your primary concern is functional issues like breathing, while a plastic surgeon focuses on the cosmetic aspects of reshaping the nose. Many patients prefer a specialist with dual expertise in ENT and facial plastic surgery to address function and aesthetics.

Where is the best place to get a nose job?

The best place to get a rhinoplasty is with a board-certified plastic surgeon or facial plastic surgeon experienced in rhinoplasty. Look for a provider with extensive before-and-after photos, positive reviews, and expertise in rhinoplasty surgery.
