Beyond creating a tired or heavy look, droopy eyelids can cause strain, double vision, and other symptoms that impact daily life. At Gilpin Facial Plastics, Dr. Gilpin offers advanced treatment options, including ptosis surgery and blepharoplasty, to restore clear vision and a refreshed appearance.

What Are Droopy Eyelids?

Droopy eyelids, medically known as ptosis, occur when the upper eyelid falls lower than normal, partially covering the pupil and sometimes affecting vision. This condition may involve one eyelid or two eyelids, and it can affect children and adults alike. When present at birth, it is called congenital ptosis.

In adults, age-related ptosis is the most common cause, but injury, certain diseases, or weakness in the levator muscle may also contribute. Whether mild or severe, drooping eyelid concerns can be both cosmetic and functional, making the eyes appear tired while also leading to vision problems.

Causes of Droopy Eyelids

Several factors can cause drooping of the upper eyelid or upper eye:

  • Weakness of the levator muscle present from birth.
  • Stretching or weakening of the eyelid muscles due to natural aging.
  • Nerve palsy or nerve damage after trauma or surgery.
  • Myasthenia gravis and other systemic diseases that weaken muscle control.
  • Previous eye surgery, such as cataract surgery, that stretches the lid.
  • Injury to the lid or surrounding skin.

In severe cases, drooping can obstruct the upper field of vision, forcing patients to tilt their head, raise their eyebrows, or adapt in other ways to see clearly.

Symptoms and Signs

The symptoms of ptosis depend on the severity and cause. Common signs include:

  • A visibly drooping eyelid affecting one or both eyes
  • Vision problems such as double vision or difficulty focusing
  • Fatigue or strain in the eyebrows, neck, or head from trying to lift the lid
  • The upper eyelid falls low enough to partially cover the pupil
  • Swelling, discomfort, or heaviness in the affected eye

In children, amblyopia (sometimes called lazy eye) can develop if ptosis is left untreated. Because ptosis can worsen with time or develop due to underlying diseases, regular eye exams with an eye specialist or ophthalmologist are important for proper evaluation.

Treatments for Droopy Eyelids

Ptosis Surgery

The most direct solution for moderate to severe ptosis is ptosis surgery, an outpatient procedure designed to tighten or shorten the levator muscle so the eyelid can be raised to its proper position.

Blepharoplasty

When excess skin or fat causes drooping, a blepharoplasty may be recommended; this eye surgery removes redundant tissue, smooths the lid, and can improve both appearance and vision.

Non-Surgical and Supportive Treatments

In children and adults with mild ptosis, careful monitoring, prescription glasses for refractive errors, or treatments for underlying diseases like myasthenia gravis may help manage symptoms.

Benefits of Professional Treatment

While ptosis may seem like a cosmetic issue, untreated droopy eyelids can lead to long-term vision problems, amblyopia in children, or chronic neck problems from constant head tilting. By choosing professional treatment with Dr. Gilpin, patients can improve vision, restore balance to their facial features, and enjoy a younger, more alert appearance.
