The tip of the nose (whether it be too wide or too long) can be a problem for so many people. Perhaps you like the overall structure of your nose, but it’s simply an overly-long or bulbous tip that bothers you. With Dr. Gilpin’s expertise and the unique techniques used in a tip rhinoplasty, you can finally have facial harmony and confidence in all your facial features.

What is a Nose Tip Rhinoplasty?

A tip rhinoplasty (also called tip plasty or nose tip surgery) is a cosmetic nose surgery that is specifically designed to shape the tip and cartilage of the nose without changing the nasal bridge. It is usually perfect for those who like the rest of their nose, but want to change a bulbous nasal tip, a droopy tip, an overprojected tip, asymmetry, or a tip that is too wide or too narrow. Dr. Gilpin will remove and reshape the cartilage to reduce the size of the nasal tip and give your face more balance.

There are two types of tip rhinoplasty: open and closed. Which one is right for you will depend on the results you’re looking for.

Ideal Candidates for Tip Rhinoplasty

Most patients who struggle with the look of the tip of their nose are good candidates for tip rhinoplasty, but there are some criteria we look for to determine if this is the right surgical procedure for you. You should be in good overall health, a nonsmoker, at least 18 years old, and have realistic expectations. We also recommend that you not be pregnant or breastfeeding and not have any medical conditions that could negatively affect the healing process. You should also be happy with the rest of your nasal structure.

Tip Rhinoplasty Procedures

What occurs during your tip rhinoplasty will depend on whether it’s an open or closed rhinoplasty procedure. No matter the type, the procedure will begin with the administration of local or general anesthesia. This ensures you’re completely comfortable throughout the surgery.

For an open tip rhinoplasty surgery, an incision will be made between the nostrils, and the skin will be pulled back so Dr. Gilpin has access to the underlying cartilage. From there, he will reshape and remove the cartilage. This type is best for the most complex cases.

For a closed tip rhinoplasty, all the incisions are made within the nose, so there is no visible scarring. This type of tip rhinoplasty is best for patients looking for more subtle results.

How long the procedure takes will depend on the type of procedure and how complex it is.

Results and Recovery for Nasal Tip Rhinoplasty

While a tip rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure and you’ll be able to go home the same day, there are some steps you’ll want to take to ensure you heal properly and receive the best results. At the start of your recovery, you’ll likely have some bruising, swelling, and mild discomfort. Dr. Gilpin will prescribe pain medication to help ensure you’re comfortable.

You will want to rest as much as possible, use ice packs as necessary, and avoid smoking, alcohol, and blood thinners. Avoiding putting pressure on your nose is also crucial. You’ll also need to avoid blowing your nose and strenuous activity. Most patients can comfortably return to work in about a week. While you may notice some results immediately, swelling and bruising will hide most of your improvements. It will take 1-2 weeks before those subside and for you to see more significant improvements. Full results can take 6-8 weeks.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is nose job permanent?

A well-performed rhinoplasty by a facial plastic surgeon is expected to be permanent. However, the younger you are when having rhinoplasty, there is a small but increased chance of your nose changing shape with age.

CAN I WEAR GLASSES AFTER MY NOSE SURGERY?

Patients who wear contact lenses can resume wearing contacts immediately after nose surgery; however, patients who wear glasses will need to take extra precaution. If you need to wear glasses during the first four-to-six weeks after nose surgery, it's recommended that you either tape your glasses to your forehead or buy a special device that allows the glasses to rest on your cheeks instead of your nose. These devices are commonly used by patients after rhinoplasty.

Why do nose jobs collapse?

Rhinoplasties collapse when they are performed in such a way that eliminates the underlying structure of nasal bone and supportive tissue. Over time, the skin above this structure sags and changes the appearance of the nose.

WHEN WILL THE STITCHES BE REMOVED AFTER RHINOPLASTY?

Stitches are typically removed six or seven days after nose surgery.

WHEN CAN I EXPECT TO SEE RESULTS FROM NOSE SURGERY?

You will probably notice an immediate improvement in the appearance of your nose, but the final results will become more evident as swelling goes down over the coming weeks and months after your procedure. It may take up to a year for the final results of your rhinoplasty to become apparent. It's normal to feel a bit anxious to see the full results, but keep in mind that your body needs time to fully heal. Every day your swelling will subside, allowing you to adjust to your newly sculpted nose.

WHERE WILL MY RHINOPLASTY IN NASHVILLE BE PERFORMED?

Dr. Gilpin's procedures are typically performed at the Cool Springs Surgery Center, which is a fully accredited, state-of-the-art surgical center conveniently located in Nashville, TN.

WILL I BE ABLE TO GO HOME AFTER MY NOSE SURGERY IS COMPLETE?

Yes, after your nose surgery is complete you will be able to go home. Rhinoplasty is usually performed on an outpatient basis. As a caveat, you will still be under the effects of anesthesia after surgery, so you will need a responsible adult to drive you home afterwards. Also, you might want to consider arranging for someone to help you out for a day or two after surgery. This will allow you to relax and maximize your recovery time from rhinoplasty.

DOES RHINOPLASTY LEAVE NOTICEABLE SCARS?

Your rhinoplasty scars will be virtually undetectable. The incision is made across the columella, which is the bridge of skin and tissue between the nostrils. The remainder of the incisions are all made inside of the nose.u00a0At the conclusion of the nose surgery, Dr. Gilpin meticulously closes the columellar incision with fine sutures, which leaves almost no trace of the incision.

WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE COMPLICATIONS FROM RHINOPLASTY?

Complications from rhinoplasty are rare, especially when performed by a board-certified surgeon on appropriately selected candidates. However, as with any surgery, risks are still possible. General complications after rhinoplasty include adverse reaction to anesthesia, poor healing, nosebleed, and infection.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO RECOVER FROM RHINOPLASTY? WILL I BE IN PAIN AFTERWARDS?

Most of Dr. Gilpin's Nashville nose surgery patients report minimal pain after the procedure, and the most common concern is nasal congestion and “stuffiness” because of post-operative swelling and bruising. Patients will need about one week of downtime to recover from rhinoplasty surgery. During this time, it's important to be very gentle with your nose when washing your face or applying cosmetics. After the first five-to-seven days, people can usually return to work and resume their regular daily activities. However, strenuous exercise should be avoided until Dr. Gilpin determines that your nose has healed properly. Dr. Gilpin's follow-up schedule includes an appointment four days after surgery, then one week, two weeks, six months, and one year. At your first follow-up appointments, he can make sure you're healing optimally and clear you for physical activity, when appropriate. In the case of non-surgical rhinoplasty, downtime is very minimal. Patients might experience minor swelling or bruising, but this typically doesn't last more than a day and can usually be covered by makeup.

Is it better to go to an ENT or plastic surgeon for rhinoplasty?

It depends on your goals. An ENT surgeon may be ideal if your primary concern is functional issues like breathing, while a plastic surgeon focuses on the cosmetic aspects of reshaping the nose. Many patients prefer a specialist with dual expertise in ENT and facial plastic surgery to address function and aesthetics.

Where is the best place to get a nose job?

The best place to get a rhinoplasty is with a board-certified plastic surgeon or facial plastic surgeon experienced in rhinoplasty. Look for a provider with extensive before-and-after photos, positive reviews, and expertise in rhinoplasty surgery.
