At Gilpin Facial Plastics + Aesthetics, we understand the importance of creating a balanced, harmonious look that aligns with each individual’s unique features. Asian rhinoplasty, often referred to as ethnic rhinoplasty, is a specialized procedure that focuses on enhancing the nose to better complement the facial structure while respecting the patient’s cultural heritage. The goal of Asian rhinoplasty is to refine the nose, whether it’s to build more definition, improve the profile, or achieve better facial harmony.

What is Asian Rhinoplasty?

Asian rhinoplasty is a customized approach to nasal surgery that takes into consideration the distinctive characteristics of the Asian nose. This type of rhinoplasty can address various concerns, such as a flat nasal bridge, a bulbous tip, or wide nostrils. The procedure is designed to enhance the natural beauty of the face without altering the ethnic identity. By carefully sculpting the nasal structure, we can improve facial balance and enhance features while maintaining a natural and culturally sensitive result.

Ideal Candidates for Asian Rhinoplasty

Ideal candidates for Asian rhinoplasty are individuals who are in good overall health, have realistic expectations, and desire to enhance the appearance of their nose in a way that suits their facial structure. Most patients seek this procedure to improve the shape of their nose, either by adding definition or refining features, such as the bridge or tip. People who may feel self-conscious about the size or shape of their nose or those who have functional concerns (like breathing difficulties) are often excellent candidates for this procedure.

To best determine if this procedure is right for you, please schedule a consultation with Dr. Gilpin today.

The Asian Rhinoplasty Procedure

The Asian rhinoplasty procedure itself typically takes around two to three hours, depending on the complexity of the desired results. Asian rhinoplasty is often performed under general anesthesia, ensuring that the patient remains comfortable and relaxed throughout the surgery.

The specific approach used will depend on the goals discussed during your consultation. Common techniques involve grafting cartilage or bone, often taken from the patient’s own body (such as from the septum, ear, or rib), to build up a more defined nasal bridge. In some cases, the nasal tip may also be refined for a more proportionate appearance. Dr. Gilpin uses advanced surgical techniques that minimize scarring and enhance the natural contours of the nose.

Results and Recovery for Asian Rhinoplasty

Asian rhinoplasty results are immediately visible, though the final shape of the nose will take some time to fully reveal itself as swelling gradually subsides. It’s common for Asian patients to experience mild swelling and bruising around the nose and eyes during the first few days following surgery. Most patients are able to return to work or light activities within one to two weeks, but strenuous exercise or heavy lifting should be avoided for at least four to six weeks. The final results of the surgery will be apparent in about six months to a year once the swelling has fully resolved. With proper care and maintenance, the improvements made during Asian rhinoplasty can last for many years.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is nose job permanent?

A well-performed rhinoplasty by a facial plastic surgeon is expected to be permanent. However, the younger you are when having rhinoplasty, there is a small but increased chance of your nose changing shape with age.

Why do nose jobs collapse?

Rhinoplasties collapse when they are performed in such a way that eliminates the underlying structure of nasal bone and supportive tissue. Over time, the skin above this structure sags and changes the appearance of the nose.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO RECOVER FROM RHINOPLASTY? WILL I BE IN PAIN AFTERWARDS?

Most of Dr. Gilpin's Nashville nose surgery patients report minimal pain after the procedure, and the most common concern is nasal congestion and “stuffiness” because of post-operative swelling and bruising. Patients will need about one week of downtime to recover from rhinoplasty surgery. During this time, it's important to be very gentle with your nose when washing your face or applying cosmetics. After the first five-to-seven days, people can usually return to work and resume their regular daily activities. However, strenuous exercise should be avoided until Dr. Gilpin determines that your nose has healed properly. Dr. Gilpin's follow-up schedule includes an appointment four days after surgery, then one week, two weeks, six months, and one year. At your first follow-up appointments, he can make sure you're healing optimally and clear you for physical activity, when appropriate. In the case of non-surgical rhinoplasty, downtime is very minimal. Patients might experience minor swelling or bruising, but this typically doesn't last more than a day and can usually be covered by makeup.

WHERE WILL MY RHINOPLASTY IN NASHVILLE BE PERFORMED?

Dr. Gilpin's procedures are typically performed at the Cool Springs Surgery Center, which is a fully accredited, state-of-the-art surgical center conveniently located in Nashville, TN.

CAN I WEAR GLASSES AFTER MY NOSE SURGERY?

Patients who wear contact lenses can resume wearing contacts immediately after nose surgery; however, patients who wear glasses will need to take extra precaution. If you need to wear glasses during the first four-to-six weeks after nose surgery, it's recommended that you either tape your glasses to your forehead or buy a special device that allows the glasses to rest on your cheeks instead of your nose. These devices are commonly used by patients after rhinoplasty.

WILL I BE ABLE TO GO HOME AFTER MY NOSE SURGERY IS COMPLETE?

Yes, after your nose surgery is complete you will be able to go home. Rhinoplasty is usually performed on an outpatient basis. As a caveat, you will still be under the effects of anesthesia after surgery, so you will need a responsible adult to drive you home afterwards. Also, you might want to consider arranging for someone to help you out for a day or two after surgery. This will allow you to relax and maximize your recovery time from rhinoplasty.

DOES RHINOPLASTY LEAVE NOTICEABLE SCARS?

Your rhinoplasty scars will be virtually undetectable. The incision is made across the columella, which is the bridge of skin and tissue between the nostrils. The remainder of the incisions are all made inside of the nose.u00a0At the conclusion of the nose surgery, Dr. Gilpin meticulously closes the columellar incision with fine sutures, which leaves almost no trace of the incision.

WHEN WILL THE STITCHES BE REMOVED AFTER RHINOPLASTY?

Stitches are typically removed six or seven days after nose surgery.

WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE COMPLICATIONS FROM RHINOPLASTY?

Complications from rhinoplasty are rare, especially when performed by a board-certified surgeon on appropriately selected candidates. However, as with any surgery, risks are still possible. General complications after rhinoplasty include adverse reaction to anesthesia, poor healing, nosebleed, and infection.

WHEN CAN I EXPECT TO SEE RESULTS FROM NOSE SURGERY?

You will probably notice an immediate improvement in the appearance of your nose, but the final results will become more evident as swelling goes down over the coming weeks and months after your procedure. It may take up to a year for the final results of your rhinoplasty to become apparent. It's normal to feel a bit anxious to see the full results, but keep in mind that your body needs time to fully heal. Every day your swelling will subside, allowing you to adjust to your newly sculpted nose.

Is it better to go to an ENT or plastic surgeon for rhinoplasty?

It depends on your goals. An ENT surgeon may be ideal if your primary concern is functional issues like breathing, while a plastic surgeon focuses on the cosmetic aspects of reshaping the nose. Many patients prefer a specialist with dual expertise in ENT and facial plastic surgery to address function and aesthetics.

Where is the best place to get a nose job?

The best place to get a rhinoplasty is with a board-certified plastic surgeon or facial plastic surgeon experienced in rhinoplasty. Look for a provider with extensive before-and-after photos, positive reviews, and expertise in rhinoplasty surgery.
