At Gilpin Facial Plastics + Aesthetics in Nashville, we understand that your nose plays a major role in how you feel about your appearance. A bulbous nasal tip, one that appears wide, rounded, or lacking definition, can draw attention and impact your overall facial harmony. If you’ve been searching for a refined, more balanced look, bulbous nose rhinoplasty might be the answer. Our team is here to help you feel confident in your profile, both in the mirror and in photos.

What is Bulbous Nose Rhinoplasty?

Bulbous nose rhinoplasty, also called bulbous nose surgery, is a specialized form of cosmetic nasal surgery that focuses on reshaping the tip of the nose. This type of rhinoplasty addresses excess cartilage, thick skin, or a lack of definition in the nasal tip that gives the nose a round or overly full appearance. The goal is to create a more refined, natural-looking nasal tip that blends harmoniously with your other facial features. While it may seem like a subtle adjustment, even small changes to the tip of the nose can have a transformative effect on your overall appearance.

At Gilpin Facial Plastics, our double board-certified facial plastic surgeon, Dr. David Gilpin, brings an artistic eye and surgical precision to each rhinoplasty procedure, ensuring results that look natural and never overdone.

Ideal Candidates for Bulbous Nose Rhinoplasty

If you’ve ever felt like the tip of your nose appears too round, wide, or lacks definition, you might be an excellent candidate for bulbous nose rhinoplasty. Ideal candidates are in good overall health, non-smokers, and have realistic expectations for what surgery can achieve. Many of our patients seek rhinoplasty after years of feeling self-conscious in photos or frustrated by the way their nose affects their facial proportions.

This procedure is often chosen by individuals who have inherited their nasal shape genetically, but it can also be helpful for those whose nasal appearance has changed with age or due to a previous surgery. During your consultation, we’ll assess your nasal anatomy, skin thickness, and aesthetic goals to determine the best approach for your unique needs.

Bulbous Nose Rhinoplasty Pre-Op Recommendations

To ensure the best possible outcome, preparation for rhinoplasty is key. Before surgery, Dr. Gilpin will walk you through a detailed pre-operative plan. You may be asked to stop certain medications or supplements that can increase bleeding, and if you smoke, you’ll need to stop well in advance of your procedure, as smoking can interfere with healing.

We’ll also take time to review your medical history, go over the surgical process, and answer any questions you have. We encourage you to prepare by maintaining a healthy lifestyle, staying well hydrated, and arranging for someone to drive you home after surgery. Your comfort, safety, and confidence are our top priorities from the very beginning.

The Bulbous Nose Rhinoplasty Procedure

Rhinoplasty to correct a bulbous tip is typically performed under general anesthesia and can take between one and three hours, depending on the complexity of your nasal structure and whether this is a primary or revision surgery.

During the procedure, Dr. Gilpin carefully reshapes the nasal tip by refining or reducing the underlying cartilage. He may use techniques such as cartilage suturing, reshaping of the lower lateral cartilages, or adding grafts to improve definition and support. The approach may be open or closed, depending on what’s most appropriate for your anatomy and desired outcome. Rest assured, every step of the procedure is tailored specifically to create a natural-looking, balanced result that enhances, not changes, your unique facial features.

Results and Recovery for Bulbous Nose Rhinoplasty

Recovery after bulbous nose rhinoplasty is a gradual process, but most patients find it very manageable. You’ll likely experience some swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort in the days following surgery. A nasal splint is typically worn for the first week to protect and support the new shape of your nose.

Initial swelling subsides within a few weeks, allowing you to start seeing your results, but final refinement can take up to a year as subtle swelling continues to diminish. Our team provides detailed post-op care instructions and is always available to support you through your recovery journey. Most patients feel comfortable returning to work or social activities within 7–10 days, depending on the extent of the surgery.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is nose job permanent?

A well-performed rhinoplasty by a facial plastic surgeon is expected to be permanent. However, the younger you are when having rhinoplasty, there is a small but increased chance of your nose changing shape with age.

Why do nose jobs collapse?

Rhinoplasties collapse when they are performed in such a way that eliminates the underlying structure of nasal bone and supportive tissue. Over time, the skin above this structure sags and changes the appearance of the nose.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO RECOVER FROM RHINOPLASTY? WILL I BE IN PAIN AFTERWARDS?

Most of Dr. Gilpin's Nashville nose surgery patients report minimal pain after the procedure, and the most common concern is nasal congestion and “stuffiness” because of post-operative swelling and bruising. Patients will need about one week of downtime to recover from rhinoplasty surgery. During this time, it's important to be very gentle with your nose when washing your face or applying cosmetics. After the first five-to-seven days, people can usually return to work and resume their regular daily activities. However, strenuous exercise should be avoided until Dr. Gilpin determines that your nose has healed properly. Dr. Gilpin's follow-up schedule includes an appointment four days after surgery, then one week, two weeks, six months, and one year. At your first follow-up appointments, he can make sure you're healing optimally and clear you for physical activity, when appropriate. In the case of non-surgical rhinoplasty, downtime is very minimal. Patients might experience minor swelling or bruising, but this typically doesn't last more than a day and can usually be covered by makeup.

WHERE WILL MY RHINOPLASTY IN NASHVILLE BE PERFORMED?

Dr. Gilpin's procedures are typically performed at the Cool Springs Surgery Center, which is a fully accredited, state-of-the-art surgical center conveniently located in Nashville, TN.

CAN I WEAR GLASSES AFTER MY NOSE SURGERY?

Patients who wear contact lenses can resume wearing contacts immediately after nose surgery; however, patients who wear glasses will need to take extra precaution. If you need to wear glasses during the first four-to-six weeks after nose surgery, it's recommended that you either tape your glasses to your forehead or buy a special device that allows the glasses to rest on your cheeks instead of your nose. These devices are commonly used by patients after rhinoplasty.

WILL I BE ABLE TO GO HOME AFTER MY NOSE SURGERY IS COMPLETE?

Yes, after your nose surgery is complete you will be able to go home. Rhinoplasty is usually performed on an outpatient basis. As a caveat, you will still be under the effects of anesthesia after surgery, so you will need a responsible adult to drive you home afterwards. Also, you might want to consider arranging for someone to help you out for a day or two after surgery. This will allow you to relax and maximize your recovery time from rhinoplasty.

DOES RHINOPLASTY LEAVE NOTICEABLE SCARS?

Your rhinoplasty scars will be virtually undetectable. The incision is made across the columella, which is the bridge of skin and tissue between the nostrils. The remainder of the incisions are all made inside of the nose.u00a0At the conclusion of the nose surgery, Dr. Gilpin meticulously closes the columellar incision with fine sutures, which leaves almost no trace of the incision.

WHEN WILL THE STITCHES BE REMOVED AFTER RHINOPLASTY?

Stitches are typically removed six or seven days after nose surgery.

WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE COMPLICATIONS FROM RHINOPLASTY?

Complications from rhinoplasty are rare, especially when performed by a board-certified surgeon on appropriately selected candidates. However, as with any surgery, risks are still possible. General complications after rhinoplasty include adverse reaction to anesthesia, poor healing, nosebleed, and infection.

WHEN CAN I EXPECT TO SEE RESULTS FROM NOSE SURGERY?

You will probably notice an immediate improvement in the appearance of your nose, but the final results will become more evident as swelling goes down over the coming weeks and months after your procedure. It may take up to a year for the final results of your rhinoplasty to become apparent. It's normal to feel a bit anxious to see the full results, but keep in mind that your body needs time to fully heal. Every day your swelling will subside, allowing you to adjust to your newly sculpted nose.

Is it better to go to an ENT or plastic surgeon for rhinoplasty?

It depends on your goals. An ENT surgeon may be ideal if your primary concern is functional issues like breathing, while a plastic surgeon focuses on the cosmetic aspects of reshaping the nose. Many patients prefer a specialist with dual expertise in ENT and facial plastic surgery to address function and aesthetics.

Where is the best place to get a nose job?

The best place to get a rhinoplasty is with a board-certified plastic surgeon or facial plastic surgeon experienced in rhinoplasty. Look for a provider with extensive before-and-after photos, positive reviews, and expertise in rhinoplasty surgery.
