Hyperpigmentation is a common skin concern that affects people of all ages and skin types. At Gilpin Facial Plastics in Nashville, Dr. Gilpin and his experienced team offer a range of safe and effective cosmetic treatments to help restore a more even, radiant complexion. Whether your hyperpigmentation is caused by sun damage, acne scars, or the natural signs of aging, we provide personalized solutions to achieve visible results tailored to your skin type and goals.

What is Hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation refers to areas of the skin that appear darker than the surrounding tissue due to excess melanin production. It can occur anywhere on the body, but it’s most common on the face, neck, chest, and hands; areas frequently exposed to the sun. This condition can affect people of all skin tones, though darker skin types may be more prone to certain types of pigmentation, such as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Treatments for Hyperpigmentation

At Gilpin Facial Plastics, we offer advanced, medically supervised treatments to safely and effectively treat hyperpigmentation and other skin concerns, including:

  • Sciton BBL®: Intense pulsed light used to target visible signs of aging and discoloration, improving tone and texture while stimulating new skin regeneration.
  • Sciton MOXI®: Ideal for darker skin types and younger patients. MOXI improves pore size, mild pigmentation, and uneven skin, making it perfect for early signs of aging.
  • Sciton HALO®: A hybrid laser that combines ablative and non-ablative wavelengths to treat both superficial and deeper pigment in a single procedure.
  • Chemical Peels: Light chemical peel, or superficial peel,(e.g., glycolic acid, salicylic acid) exfoliates the epidermis to address mild discoloration and improve skin appearance. Medium chemical peel (e.g., trichloroacetic acid) penetrates the middle layers to treat acne, age spots, and wrinkles. Deep peel (e.g., carbolic acid) targets deep scars, precancerous growths, and stubborn pigmentation but requires longer recovery, possibly including antiviral medication or oral antibiotics as the skin heals.
  • HydraFacial & DiamondGlow®: Non-invasive cosmetic treatments that exfoliate and infuse the treated area with nourishing serums to improve skin tone and hydration.
  • SkinPen® Microneedling & RF Microneedling: Stimulate collagen production to improve uneven skin tone, acne scars, and fine lines, while reducing pore size and encouraging healthy new skin.

Benefits of Professional Treatment

Professional hyperpigmentation treatment provides long term benefits, including:

  • Brighter, more even complexion
  • Reduced acne scars, sun spots, and age spots
  • Safe treatment for all skin types, including darker skin types

What to Expect During Treatment

Results in

1-4 weeks

Recovery

1-3 days

Lasts

Several months

Depending on the treatment area, your provider may apply a chemical solution, perform laser treatment, or use microneedling devices. There may be a topical anesthetic applied beforehand by your dermatologic surgeon to enhance your comfort.

If you have frequent cold sores, our resident doctor, Dr. Gilpin may advise against certain treatment options to protect the surrounding tissue and make the skin smoother. You may experience mild swelling, redness, or peeling for five to seven days, depending on the intensity of the procedure.

You’ll receive instructions to apply ointment, use ice packs, and avoid sun exposure. Most patients can wear makeup once the skin heals, though some aggressive treatments like a deep chemical peel require longer downtime to see the full effect and reduce the risk of infection. How many treatments you will need to achieve the desired results will depend on factors such as skin texture, the type of treatment, and the severity of hyperpigmentation.
