The chin can be a problem area for so many of our patients. Whether due to age-related volume loss, genetics, or weight fluctuations, the chin can recede, become less defined, and affect how much you love what you see when you look in the mirror. That’s where chin fillers come in! At Gilpin Facial Plastics and Aesthetics, we can help you look and feel your best.
What is Chin Filler?
Chin fillers are a type of dermal filler and injectable chin augmentation treatment used to define and enhance the appearance of the chin area. There are a few different types of chin fillers, including FDA-approved hyaluronic acid fillers (HA fillers) and poly-L-lactic acid fillers (PLLA). Which one is right for you will depend on your concerns and the results you’re looking for.
From receding chins to weak chins to balancing facial proportions to reducing the appearance of a double chin, chin fillers can address a number of aesthetic concerns.
Who is a Candidate for Chin Filler?
Most patients struggling with their chin and jawline or looking to enhance their facial shape are good candidates for chin filler injectable treatments and soft tissue augmentation. That said, there are some criteria we follow to ensure this is the right treatment for you. We require you to be in good overall health, be a nonsmoker, have realistic expectations, and be looking for a non-surgical alternative to chin implants or other plastic surgery procedures. Chin filler injections can also be ideal for those struggling with facial wrinkles in the chin region.
What Should I Expect During Chin Filler Treatment?
Chin filler treatment could not be simpler. Your provider will start by cleaning the treatment area and marking the injection sites. They will then prepare the injections and use a very fine needle to inject the appropriate formula into the chin area. How many injections you require and the length of your treatment session will depend on the results you’re looking for. Typically, treatment takes 30-45 minutes.
Side Effects of Chin Filler
As with any treatment or cosmetic procedure, chin fillers come with side effects as well. Some of the most common side effects include swelling, bruising, and tenderness. Other side effects include infection, lumps and bumps, and allergic reactions, but those are rare.
What to Expect After Chin Filler Treatment
After chin fillers, you may have some bruising and swelling, but those side effects are temporary and only last a day or so. In the first couple of days after treatment, you’ll want to avoid putting pressure on the treatment area while also avoiding alcohol, excess heat exposure, smoking, and strenuous activity. Beyond these precautions, you will be able to return to most of your normal activities immediately.

How Long Does it Take to Start Working?
Depending on the type of injectable filler used (hyaluronic acid filler injections or PLLA injections), your results could show up immediately or take several weeks. With HA fillers, you will notice results immediately. PLLA injections require a few weeks to see results as the collagen builds up in the skin. No matter what filler is used, it can also take a couple of weeks for the fillers to fully settle and for the final results to be visible.
How Long Do Chin Filler Results Last?
With HA fillers, you can expect the results to last about a year. PLLA fillers generally last longer, with results lasting up to two years. At that point, you will need re-treatment to maintain your results.
