Surgical post-op care is a critical part of achieving safe healing and optimal results after your procedure at Gilpin Facial Plastics and Aesthetics. While every surgery is unique, proper postoperative care helps reduce complications, manage pain, and support your body during the healing process. Dr. Gilpin and our care team provide clear, personalized instructions so most patients feel confident navigating the postoperative period. Whether your surgery was minor or more complex, what you do after leaving the operating room plays an important role in your recovery.
Post-Surgery Expectations
After surgery, it’s normal to experience swelling, bruising, and mild to moderate pain. Many patients also feel groggy or fatigued as anesthesia leaves the body. Gilpin Facial Plastics uses minimal anesthesia medication to improve patient recovery and speed up the healing process. During the first few days, you may notice increased redness around the incision sites, tightness, or drainage if drains are placed.
On occasion patients experience nausea or vomiting related to anesthesia or pain medicine, particularly in the first 24 hours. Our team works very hard to prevent any sort of nausea and vomiting post-surgery. Drinking fluids, resting, and following medication instructions can help reduce nausea and support blood flow and healing. Reduction of sodium intake and heating a high protein diet post surgery can help you feel better during your post op healing time. Family members are encouraged to assist during this period, particularly with transportation, meals, and monitoring of symptoms.
Tips For Pain Management
Pain management is an essential part of post-op care. Dr. Gilpin will prescribe pain medicine if needed or recommend over-the-counter medications based on your procedure and medical history. Our team works very hard to minimize major pain medication needed for post op recovery. Take medications exactly as directed and never mix medications without consulting your physician or surgeon.
Severe pain, pain that worsens suddenly, or increased pain accompanied by fever or swelling may indicate a complication and should be reported to your physician immediately. Elevation, rest, and cold compresses (when approved) can help manage discomfort and reduce swelling.
What to Know About Incisions and Drains
Proper wound care is vital for preventing infection and promoting healing. Keep incision sites clean and dry, and follow all wound care instructions provided by your nurse or surgeon.
Drains, if placed, are used to drain excess fluid or blood and are usually removed within 24 hours of surgery. Monitor for signs of infection, including increased redness, warmth, purulent drainage, or fever. If any concerning symptoms occur, contact our office promptly for evaluation and treatment.
Physical Activity Recommendations
Early movement is important for circulation and reducing the risk of blood clots; short walks help maintain blood flow and reduce venous pressure in the legs. However, strenuous exercise and other activities should be avoided until your surgeon tells you it is safe. Compression stockings may be recommended for some patients to support circulation and reduce the risk of thrombosis. Avoid prolonged bed rest but balance activity with adequate rest during the early weeks of recovery.
Healthy Lifestyle Habits
Hydration and nutrition play a major role in healing. Drink plenty of fluids unless otherwise instructed, eat nutrient-rich foods, and avoid smoking or alcohol, as they impair blood flow and wound healing. Maintaining healthy blood pressure and avoiding blood thinners unless prescribed is also important.
Understanding the Healing Process and Complications
Healing occurs gradually over weeks. Swelling and bruising improve with time, and incisions continue to mature. While most patients recover without complications, complications can occur, including infection, blood clots, urinary retention, increased swelling, or respiratory complications.
You should contact our office if you experience symptoms that feel severe, worsen instead of improve, or cause concern at any point during your recovery. If something doesn’t feel right, it’s always better to reach out; our care team is here to support you, answer questions, and ensure your healing stays on track.
