What are Neurotoxins?

Neurotoxins and neuromodulators are prescription medicine formulas (mainly consisting of botulinum toxin) that block the signals from the brain and the rest of the nervous system to the facial muscles that tell them to contract. By no longer contracting, the neuromodulators can smooth facial wrinkles (including frown lines, forehead lines, crow’s feet, and more) and give you the younger-looking appearance you desire. Neurotoxin options include Botox Cosmetic, Dysport, and Xeomin.

These treatments are also approved for certain medical conditions. It’s approved to treat excessive sweating, chronic migraines, urinary incontinence (overactive bladder control), cervical dystonia, and chronic pain.

Ideal Candidates for Neurotoxins

Most patients looking to smooth lines and wrinkles on the face are ideal candidates for neuromodulator treatment. We also require you to be in good overall health, have realistic expectations, not be pregnant or breastfeeding, and not currently be on any blood thinners.

Anyone with a history of allergic reactions to neurotoxins should look for alternative treatment.

Pre-treatment Recommendations for Neurotoxins

Before your neurotoxin injectable treatment, there are some guidelines you’ll want to follow. You’ll want to quit smoking if you’re a smoker, stop taking blood thinners, and avoid alcohol and caffeine. You’ll also want to come to your appointment fully hydrated and with a completely clean face.

Neurotoxin Treatment

Neurotoxin and neuromodulator treatment is relatively simple. We’ll start by cleaning the treatment area. A topical anesthetic can be applied before your initial treatment to ensure your comfort, but it’s not usually necessary. From there, we’ll mark the injection sites, prepare the injections, and then start injecting the formula.

How many injections you receive will depend on the extent of your concerns and the results you’re looking for.

Types of Neurotoxins

Results and Recovery

After your neuromodulator injections, you may experience some swelling, bruising, and redness, but those side effects will subside within a day or two. Muscle weakness can also occur, but it’s much more rare.

As you recover, you’ll want to avoid putting pressure on the injection sites, drinking alcohol, smoking, and lying down. You may also need to limit strenuous activities, hydrate as much as possible, and follow any instructions your provider gives you.

Results are not immediate with neurotoxins. It can take a few days to two weeks to see results, and these results can last for about 3-4 months. Multiple treatments every 4 months are typically needed to maintain your results.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between Botox®, Dysport®, Xeomin®, and Daxxify®?

Botox® is the most widely known and has been used for both cosmetic and medical purposes for decades; Dysport® has a slightly thinner consistency, which allows it to spread more easily. Xeomin® is known as a "naked" botulinum toxin because it contains no accessory proteins, potentially reducing the risk of resistance over time, while Daxxify® is the newest of the group and is designed for longer-lasting results, often up to six months.

How long do the effects of neurotoxins typically last?

The effects of most neurotoxins typically last 3 to 4 months, though this can vary depending on the individual’s metabolism, the area treated, and the amount injected. Daxxify®, however, may offer results that last up to 6 months or longer.

At what age should someone consider starting neurotoxin injections for wrinkle prevention?

Preventative neurotoxin treatment, often referred to as “prejuvenation,” is becoming increasingly popular among people in their mid-to-late 20s to early 30s. However, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer; treatment should be based on facial muscle movement and skin quality rather than age alone.

What facial areas are most commonly treated with neurotoxins?

The most frequently treated areas include the forehead lines, glabellar lines (also known as "11s" between the brows), and crow’s feet (lines around the eyes). Other popular areas include bunny lines on the nose, lip lines, chin dimpling, neck bands, and even the jawline for slimming or TMJ relief.

Are there any risks or side effects associated with neurotoxin treatments?

While neurotoxin treatments are generally safe and well-tolerated, minor side effects can include bruising, swelling, or redness at the injection site. Less common risks include temporary drooping of the eyelid or eyebrow, asymmetry, or a headache.

How long does a typical neurotoxin appointment last, and is there any downtime required?

The injections themselves only take 15 to 30 minutes, and most patients can resume normal activities immediately afterward. There is no significant downtime, though it’s recommended to avoid heavy exercise, alcohol, lying down, or touching the treated area for several hours post-treatment.

Can neurotoxins be combined with dermal fillers or other aesthetic treatments?

Neurotoxins are often combined with dermal fillers, laser treatments, microneedling, and facials as part of a comprehensive anti-aging strategy. Combining treatments can deliver more balanced and youthful results when performed by a skilled provider with an understanding of facial anatomy.

How do neurotoxins help with medical conditions like migraines or excessive sweating?

For chronic migraines, Botox® is injected around the head and neck to reduce muscle tension and block pain signals. In cases of excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), neurotoxins can be injected into areas such as the underarms, palms, or feet to block the nerves that trigger sweat production temporarily.
