What are Neurotoxins?
Neurotoxins and neuromodulators are prescription medicine formulas (mainly consisting of botulinum toxin) that block the signals from the brain and the rest of the nervous system to the facial muscles that tell them to contract. By no longer contracting, the neuromodulators can smooth facial wrinkles (including frown lines, forehead lines, crow’s feet, and more) and give you the younger-looking appearance you desire. Neurotoxin options include Botox Cosmetic, Dysport, and Xeomin.
These treatments are also approved for certain medical conditions. It’s approved to treat excessive sweating, chronic migraines, urinary incontinence (overactive bladder control), cervical dystonia, and chronic pain.
Ideal Candidates for Neurotoxins
Most patients looking to smooth lines and wrinkles on the face are ideal candidates for neuromodulator treatment. We also require you to be in good overall health, have realistic expectations, not be pregnant or breastfeeding, and not currently be on any blood thinners.
Anyone with a history of allergic reactions to neurotoxins should look for alternative treatment.
Pre-treatment Recommendations for Neurotoxins
Before your neurotoxin injectable treatment, there are some guidelines you’ll want to follow. You’ll want to quit smoking if you’re a smoker, stop taking blood thinners, and avoid alcohol and caffeine. You’ll also want to come to your appointment fully hydrated and with a completely clean face.

Neurotoxin Treatment
Neurotoxin and neuromodulator treatment is relatively simple. We’ll start by cleaning the treatment area. A topical anesthetic can be applied before your initial treatment to ensure your comfort, but it’s not usually necessary. From there, we’ll mark the injection sites, prepare the injections, and then start injecting the formula.
How many injections you receive will depend on the extent of your concerns and the results you’re looking for.
Types of Neurotoxins
Botox

Take a LookDysport
Dysport is primarily designed to smooth out frown lines (or glabellar lines). Results are typically seen within a few days.

Xeomin is similar to Dysport and Botox but doesn’t contain any added proteins. It’s considered a “cleaner” version of the other neurotoxin injectables and can be a great alternative for patients who aren’t able to have Botox.

Results and Recovery
After your neuromodulator injections, you may experience some swelling, bruising, and redness, but those side effects will subside within a day or two. Muscle weakness can also occur, but it’s much more rare.
As you recover, you’ll want to avoid putting pressure on the injection sites, drinking alcohol, smoking, and lying down. You may also need to limit strenuous activities, hydrate as much as possible, and follow any instructions your provider gives you.
Results are not immediate with neurotoxins. It can take a few days to two weeks to see results, and these results can last for about 3-4 months. Multiple treatments every 4 months are typically needed to maintain your results.
