All About A Brow Lift
Request ConsultationIf different hairstyles, hats, or scarves don’t seem to make our forehead look smaller or less noticeable, it can be frustrating. A large and disproportionate forehead can cause the face to look unbalanced and even be the source of teasing or ridicule. In some cases, surgery is the best option for lowering the hairline and creating a more natural, proportional look.
Hairline reduction, sometimes hairline lowering or forehead reduction, is a procedure that brings the hairline down and reduces the vertical width of the forehead. It works by removing excess skin along the top of the forehead and hairline, then bringing the hairline down to a more natural position. Any incisions are hidden within the new hairline and are virtually undetectable.

How Do I Know When I’m Ready for Hairline Reduction?
Hairline reduction is the best option for patients who are bothered by the appearance of their natural forehead because of its visible area. If you identify with the following, hairline reduction may be a great option for you:
- You feel like your forehead is prominent, large, or glaring
- You feel like your forehead draws attention from your other features
- You have a “fivehead” or a large gap between your hairline and eyebrows
- You have a full head of hair but still have the appearance of a receding hairline
There are important considerations for hairline reduction, which is why it’s important to consult an experienced facial plastic surgeon. Hairline reduction is not a hair restoration surgery – in fact, it’s not a good option for patients who have hair loss around the hairline because it can result in visible scarring. It’s also best for patients who have denser, thicker hair that can easily cover the incisions. Hairline reduction is often combined with surgical options like the endoscopic brow lift or facelift. Dr. Gilpin will work with you to create your personalized treatment plan during your consultation.

What Happens During Hairline Reduction?
Hairline reduction is a fairly quick and simple procedure when performed by a board-certified facial plastic surgeon. It can be performed while comfortably awake at our accredited private surgical suite. To begin, Dr. Gilpin will create an incision within the hairline and remove a precise amount of skin. The hairline will then be pulled gently downward to join the skin and carefully sutured together. Once complete, you can return home.

Hairline Reduction Results and Recovery
After your hairline reduction, it’s normal to experience some swelling, soreness, and bruising. Our team will send you home with detailed aftercare instructions including how to manage swelling and care for your incisions. It’s essential to keep your head elevated and avoid exercise or extensive activity. Most patients can return to work within a week but Dr. Gilpin will give you a personalized recommendation based on your job and activity level. For example, a more physical job will require more downtime than an office-based job.
You can expect swelling to mostly subside within 1-2 weeks. At this point, you’ll be able to see a noticeable improvement in the balance of your features, the appearance of your forehead, and the height of your hairline. Over the next several weeks, swelling will continue to go away and your incisions will begin to fade. Dr. Gilpin will check in to ensure your results will be long-lasting and continue to boost your confidence for the long term.
