What are Fillers?

Fillers (also known as dermal fillers or wrinkle fillers) are aesthetic formulas that, when injected, can restore volume and plump up and smooth wrinkles to achieve a more youthful appearance. They can be made out of a number of different active ingredients, including hyaluronic acid and poly-l-lactic acid. Which ingredient is used in the injectable dermal filler treatment will determine when the results show up and how long your results will last.

Ideal Candidate for Fillers

Most patients struggling with lines and wrinkles and facial volume loss are typically good candidates for fillers. That said, there are some criteria we look for to determine a patient’s eligibility for these soft tissue fillers. We require patients to be in good overall health, have realistic expectations, and not be pregnant or breastfeeding.

Pre-treatment Recommendations for Fillers

Before your injectable filler treatment, there are a few guidelines you’ll want to follow to ensure the best results. Pre-treatment, we recommend avoiding alcohol, caffeine, and blood-thinning medications. You’ll also want to stay hydrated, stop using certain skincare products with retinol, retinoids, and glycolic acids, and avoid strenuous exercises at least 24 hours beforehand.

Filler Treatment

Dermal filler treatment is a relatively simple procedure. Your provider will start by cleansing the treatment area and preparing the injections. From there, we’ll mark the injection sites and inject the dermal fillers under the skin. Where we inject dermal fillers will depend on where your concerns are.

How many injections you receive will depend on the results you’re looking for and the intensity of your wrinkles and volume loss.

Results and Recovery

After receiving dermal filler injections, you might experience some swelling, bruising, and tenderness, but those side effects will dissipate within a few hours to a few days. We recommend applying an ice pack to the injection sites to help ease swelling and any discomfort.

As for results, it can depend on the type of dermal filler injections. With hyaluronic acid fillers, you will notice improvements immediately. With PLLA fillers and collagen stimulators, the results can take several weeks to appear. Results can last anywhere from a few months to a few years.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take for dermal filler to settle in?

Dermal fillers typically take about two weeks to fully settle and integrate with your tissue. During this time, mild swelling and bruising will subside, revealing your final results.

How long after fillers can I sleep on my side?

It’s best to avoid sleeping on your side for at least 24-48 hours after treatment to prevent uneven pressure on the treated areas. Sleeping on your back with your head slightly elevated can help minimize swelling and create better results.

When can I wash my face normally after fillers?

You can gently cleanse your face the same day as your filler treatment, but avoid excessive rubbing or pressure. After 24 hours, you can resume your normal skincare routine.

How soon can I go for a walk after fillers?

A light walk is fine immediately after filler treatment, but it's best to avoid strenuous exercise for at least 24-48 hours. This helps minimize swelling and bruising while allowing the filler to settle properly.

Can I drink coffee after fillers?

It's recommended to avoid coffee for at least 24 hours after getting fillers, since caffeine can contribute to swelling and bruising. Staying well-hydrated with water is a better option during recovery.

How many days before an event should you get fillers?

For best results, schedule your filler appointment at least two weeks before an event. This allows time for any swelling or bruising to subside and for the filler to settle into its final appearance.

Will people notice if I get fillers?

When done by a skilled provider, fillers enhance your features in a natural-looking way. People may notice that you look refreshed but often won’t be able to pinpoint why.
