At Gilpin Facial Plastics + Aesthetics, we understand that your nose is a defining feature of your face and is often closely tied to your cultural identity. Ethnic rhinoplasty is a highly specialized procedure designed to refine the nose while preserving the natural characteristics that make you uniquely you. Dr. David Gilpin is known for his precision and artistic eye, delivering results that are both beautiful and respectful of each patient’s background.

What is Ethnic Rhinoplasty?

Ethnic rhinoplasty is a specialized form of nose reshaping surgery that takes into account the unique nasal features often seen in individuals of African, Asian, Middle Eastern, Hispanic, and other non-Caucasian descent. The goal isn’t to change or erase your ethnic identity; instead, it’s to enhance facial harmony while preserving the natural characteristics that make you who you are.

During your consultation, Dr. Gilpin will evaluate your nose and facial features to determine the best approach for you, whether it’s ultrasonic, traditional, or a combination of both, ensuring the final result is natural, balanced, and true to your identity.

Ideal Candidates for Ethnic Rhinoplasty

If you’re looking to refine the appearance of your nose without compromising the ethnic features that make you who you are, ethnic rhinoplasty may be the right choice. Many patients seek this procedure to address concerns such as a flat or wide nasal bridge, flared nostrils, a bulbous or undefined tip, or a dorsal hump.

Ideal candidates are in good health, have realistic expectations, and have fully matured facial features, which typically occurs in the mid-to-late teens. During your consultation, Dr. Gilpin will take the time to understand your goals, evaluate your facial structure, and guide you through the nose surgery options that will best support your vision.

The Ethnic Rhinoplasty Procedure

Ethnic rhinoplasty surgery is performed under general anesthesia and typically takes a few hours. Dr. Gilpin uses either traditional surgical instruments, ultrasonic tools, or a combination of both, depending on your unique needs. The choice of technique is based on factors such as your bone structure, cartilage strength, skin thickness, and the type of refinement you’re looking for.

Ultrasonic rhinoplasty offers the advantage of extremely precise bone reshaping with less trauma to the surrounding tissues, which can result in less bruising and faster recovery. Traditional techniques, on the other hand, may be better suited for certain structural changes or soft tissue refinements. Dr. Gilpin will determine the most effective approach during your planning process to ensure the best aesthetic and functional outcome.

Results and Recovery for Ethnic Rhinoplasty

Recovery from ethnic rhinoplasty is generally a smooth one. Most patients begin to notice an improvement in the overall shape and profile of their nose within the first couple of weeks as swelling and bruising gradually subside. By the end of the first week or two, many people feel comfortable returning to work or social activities.

Over the following months, you’ll continue to see subtle refinements as your nose heals and settles into its new shape. Final results typically become more apparent between six months and one year after surgery. Throughout the recovery process, our team is here to support you with guidance, follow-up care, and a genuine investment in your outcome.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is nose job permanent?

A well-performed rhinoplasty by a facial plastic surgeon is expected to be permanent. However, the younger you are when having rhinoplasty, there is a small but increased chance of your nose changing shape with age.

Why do nose jobs collapse?

Rhinoplasties collapse when they are performed in such a way that eliminates the underlying structure of nasal bone and supportive tissue. Over time, the skin above this structure sags and changes the appearance of the nose.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO RECOVER FROM RHINOPLASTY? WILL I BE IN PAIN AFTERWARDS?

Most of Dr. Gilpin's Nashville nose surgery patients report minimal pain after the procedure, and the most common concern is nasal congestion and “stuffiness” because of post-operative swelling and bruising. Patients will need about one week of downtime to recover from rhinoplasty surgery. During this time, it's important to be very gentle with your nose when washing your face or applying cosmetics. After the first five-to-seven days, people can usually return to work and resume their regular daily activities. However, strenuous exercise should be avoided until Dr. Gilpin determines that your nose has healed properly. Dr. Gilpin's follow-up schedule includes an appointment four days after surgery, then one week, two weeks, six months, and one year. At your first follow-up appointments, he can make sure you're healing optimally and clear you for physical activity, when appropriate. In the case of non-surgical rhinoplasty, downtime is very minimal. Patients might experience minor swelling or bruising, but this typically doesn't last more than a day and can usually be covered by makeup.

WHERE WILL MY RHINOPLASTY IN NASHVILLE BE PERFORMED?

Dr. Gilpin's procedures are typically performed at the Cool Springs Surgery Center, which is a fully accredited, state-of-the-art surgical center conveniently located in Nashville, TN.

CAN I WEAR GLASSES AFTER MY NOSE SURGERY?

Patients who wear contact lenses can resume wearing contacts immediately after nose surgery; however, patients who wear glasses will need to take extra precaution. If you need to wear glasses during the first four-to-six weeks after nose surgery, it's recommended that you either tape your glasses to your forehead or buy a special device that allows the glasses to rest on your cheeks instead of your nose. These devices are commonly used by patients after rhinoplasty.

WILL I BE ABLE TO GO HOME AFTER MY NOSE SURGERY IS COMPLETE?

Yes, after your nose surgery is complete you will be able to go home. Rhinoplasty is usually performed on an outpatient basis. As a caveat, you will still be under the effects of anesthesia after surgery, so you will need a responsible adult to drive you home afterwards. Also, you might want to consider arranging for someone to help you out for a day or two after surgery. This will allow you to relax and maximize your recovery time from rhinoplasty.

DOES RHINOPLASTY LEAVE NOTICEABLE SCARS?

Your rhinoplasty scars will be virtually undetectable. The incision is made across the columella, which is the bridge of skin and tissue between the nostrils. The remainder of the incisions are all made inside of the nose.u00a0At the conclusion of the nose surgery, Dr. Gilpin meticulously closes the columellar incision with fine sutures, which leaves almost no trace of the incision.

WHEN WILL THE STITCHES BE REMOVED AFTER RHINOPLASTY?

Stitches are typically removed six or seven days after nose surgery.

WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE COMPLICATIONS FROM RHINOPLASTY?

Complications from rhinoplasty are rare, especially when performed by a board-certified surgeon on appropriately selected candidates. However, as with any surgery, risks are still possible. General complications after rhinoplasty include adverse reaction to anesthesia, poor healing, nosebleed, and infection.

WHEN CAN I EXPECT TO SEE RESULTS FROM NOSE SURGERY?

You will probably notice an immediate improvement in the appearance of your nose, but the final results will become more evident as swelling goes down over the coming weeks and months after your procedure. It may take up to a year for the final results of your rhinoplasty to become apparent. It's normal to feel a bit anxious to see the full results, but keep in mind that your body needs time to fully heal. Every day your swelling will subside, allowing you to adjust to your newly sculpted nose.

Is it better to go to an ENT or plastic surgeon for rhinoplasty?

It depends on your goals. An ENT surgeon may be ideal if your primary concern is functional issues like breathing, while a plastic surgeon focuses on the cosmetic aspects of reshaping the nose. Many patients prefer a specialist with dual expertise in ENT and facial plastic surgery to address function and aesthetics.

Where is the best place to get a nose job?

The best place to get a rhinoplasty is with a board-certified plastic surgeon or facial plastic surgeon experienced in rhinoplasty. Look for a provider with extensive before-and-after photos, positive reviews, and expertise in rhinoplasty surgery.
