What Age Should I Start BOTOX®?
Posted November 02, 2022 in Botox
You likely know somebody who gets BOTOX® regularly – it’s the single most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatment performed every year. If you’ve been curious about starting BOTOX, it’s normal to wonder if you’re at the right age for it. There are actually multiple approaches to getting BOTOX depending on your age range, and Dr. Gilpin and our experienced injectors can help you determine your best options. Here’s what to know about BOTOX and what you can expect from treatment at different life stages.
BOTOX is known as a neuromodulator – a form of purified bacteria that can block nerve signals in the muscles and glands. BOTOX works by preventing muscle movements in the face and thus the wrinkles that can form over time because of them (called dynamic wrinkles). BOTOX can also relax muscles that furrow and tense, causing visible lines when you express. It’s one of the most effective anti-aging treatments available, proven by the millions of BOTOX treatments performed each year.
Getting BOTOX in your 20s is a relatively new approach to anti-aging. Sometimes called “prejuvenation,” this approach is a preventive one. Since dynamic wrinkles form over time because of expressions and facial movements, controlling these muscle movements can prevent wrinkles from forming in the first place. Preventive BOTOX can put off the need for later anti-aging treatments and surgeries, making it a worthwhile investment in your long-term confidence.
In your 30s, your body begins to slow down its cellular activity, including collagen replenishment. As collagen breaks down, it allows the skin to sag and crease. Your 30s are typically when you begin to notice fine lines in areas like the eyes (crow’s feet) and brows (forehead lines). At this stage, BOTOX can help smooth these fine lines and prevent further creasing. It’s most effective when paired with collagen-boosting treatments like microneedling or MOXI™ laser.
In your 40s, you’re typically experiencing noticeable age-related collagen loss. At this stage, this is normal and BOTOX can help smooth deeper lines and furrows around the eyes and between the brows. It’s also best paired with dermal fillers to restore volume and shape to the face, as well as more aggressive treatments like RF microneedling or laser resurfacing to boost collagen and contract skin. With the right approach, BOTOX can help put off the need for facelift surgery until your 50s or later.
