Facelift incisions are key to achieving natural-looking results while minimizing the appearance of facelift scars. At Gilpin Facial Plastics & Aesthetics, Dr. David Gilpin carefully plans the placement of each incision according to your facial anatomy, hairline, skin quality, and the facelift technique being performed. Strategic placement allows incisions to heal within natural creases, folds, and areas naturally concealed by hair and ears.

Whether you are considering a traditional facelift, deep plane facelift, or another approach to facial rejuvenation, understanding incision placement can help you feel more confident about your surgical plan.

What Are Facelift Incisions?

Facelift incisions are the surgical cuts made in the skin to provide access to the underlying facial tissues and structures that contribute to visible signs of aging. During facelift surgery, Dr. Gilpin uses carefully planned incisions to access and reposition deeper facial tissues, lift sagging skin, and remove or reposition excess skin as appropriate.

For many facelift procedures, the incision starts the ear, and follows the natural contours around the earlobe. The incision may then continue behind the ear and into the lower scalp. When a neck lift is performed with the facelift, when appropriate, there is typically an additional incision beneath the chin.

How Do Facelift Incisions Differ From Each Other?

Different facelift techniques may require different incision patterns. A traditional facelift generally requires an incision that extends around the ear and into the hairline, allowing the surgeon to address facial skin, excess skin, and underlying tissues. More limited approaches, such as a limited incision facelift, may use shorter incisions when appropriate for the patient’s specific concerns and degree of aging. A deep plane facelift also uses incisions around the ear, but the surgical technique allows Dr. Gilpin to work beneath the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) and reposition deeper facial tissues.

The location and length of facelift incisions may vary depending on factors such as:

  • The amount of sagging skin and excess tissue
  • Your face shape and natural contours
  • The condition and position of your hairline
  • Whether a neck lift is performed at the same time
  • The specific facelift technique being used
  • The degree of facial aging being addressed
  • Whether additional treatments or procedures are recommended

Dr. Gilpin typically places incisions in front of the ear within natural creases and around the ear in locations that can be concealed by the ear and surrounding hair. Behind the ear, the incision can continue into the lower scalp. When a small incision is needed beneath the chin, it can often be placed within a natural crease.

Advanced Techniques, Natural-Looking Results

Choosing facelift surgery is an important decision, and your plastic surgeon’s experience and technique can make a meaningful difference. At Gilpin Facial Plastics & Aesthetics, Dr. David Gilpin takes a detailed approach to facial rejuvenation, considering not only the skin but also the underlying structures that shape your face.

Rather than relying on skin tension alone, modern facelift techniques can reposition facial tissues to restore more youthful contours. Thoughtful incision placement is one component of this approach. By following natural creases, positioning incisions around the ear, and using the hairline and lower scalp strategically, Dr. Gilpin works to minimize visible scars while achieving meaningful rejuvenation.

How Do I Know When I’m Ready For a Facelift?

A facelift may be an excellent choice when aging has created changes that non-surgical treatments alone cannot adequately correct. Patients may begin considering facelift surgery when they notice persistent sagging skin, jowls, excess skin around the lower face, loss of jawline definition, or neck changes that remain despite other treatments.

No single age means someone is “ready” for a facelift. Instead, Dr. Gilpin evaluates facial aging, skin quality, facial anatomy, overall health, and your aesthetic goals during a private consultation. Some patients may benefit from a more limited procedure, while others may achieve a more comprehensive rejuvenated appearance through a deep plane facelift combined with a neck lift.

How Do Facelift Incisions Change Recovery?

Dr. Gilpin provides detailed postoperative instructions to help protect your incisions and support proper healing. Patients are generally encouraged to rest, keep the head elevated while sleeping, and avoid strenuous activity during the initial recovery period. Avoid unnecessary pressure on the ears or healing incisions, and follow all wound-care instructions.

Although some redness or swelling around the incision sites is expected early in recovery, these effects gradually improve. As the tissues heal, the scars typically mature and become less noticeable. Hair can also help conceal incisions around and behind the ears as healing progresses. Most patients can begin returning to social activities as swelling and bruising subside, although the exact recovery timeline varies from patient to patient. Dr. Gilpin will monitor your progress and provide individualized guidance throughout healing.
