What to Expect During Rhinoplasty Recovery Week by Week
Posted September 11, 2024 in Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery)
Rhinoplasty is an extremely rewarding procedure, but the recovery period can be emotional. Knowing what to expect can help your recovery go more smoothly, allowing you to prepare with the help of your facial plastic surgeon. At Gilpin Facial Plastics & Aesthetics, Dr. David Gilpin will spend time going over each facet of your rhinoplasty recovery in order to ensure you get good results. Here’s a quick overview of what you can expect each week as you recover.
Week 1
After you return home from surgery, you’ll have a really stuffy nose and a mild headache. Dr. Gilpin will place a splint and cast to support and protect your nose. You may have some bleeding down the back of your throat, and you’ll be given plenty of gauze to manage it. For the first few days, you may have a bit of discomfort and bruising around your eyes is common since blood tends to pool in this area. Dr. Gilpin will give you medications to manage it. Make sure to spend your time resting and avoid strenuous activities. However, also make sure to walk around the house regularly to keep blood flowing.
During the first week, you may not feel confident about your decision to undergo rhinoplasty. This is normal! Things like bruising and swelling can cause regret, but it’s important to trust the process. Get support from your family and close friends, and focus on keeping yourself occupied with entertainment that allows you to rest and recuperate. The first week will pass.
Week 2
During your second week, you’ll likely have a follow-up appointment to remove the splint and make sure your results are progressing. Your cast will be off and your nose will be taped and your results will progress. Pain and discomfort should be minimal by this point – if it’s still lingering, make sure to bring it up with Dr. Gilpin. Bruising and swelling should be primarily gone during the second week, so continue to be patient. The majority of Dr. Gilpins patients have minimal bruising by week 2. Continue to rest and avoid strenuous activities. Continue to also sleep with your head elevated to avoid worsening the swelling.
Week 3
After the first two weeks, most swelling and bruising will have subsided. You’ll begin to notice your results at this point. It’s normal to still have some slight swelling (which can be present for up to a year after surgery), but it’s likely that most people won’t notice it. At this point, it’s best to talk with Dr. Gilpin about whether you can begin returning to your normal activities.
Week 4
You should feel like yourself again by this point, with very little visible bruising or swelling. At four weeks, you can begin easing back into light activities and exercises. Make sure to listen to your body and dial back your activity level if needed. By now, you should be able to fully enjoy your results and the confidence boost that comes with it.
