Recovery Tips and What to Expect After a Neck Lift Surgery

The neck lift remains the best way to create a tighter, more defined neck and jawline. If you’re considering a neck lift, you can expect incredible results from our dual-board-certified facial plastic surgeon. However, preparing for your surgical recovery is a crucial step. Here are some of our top things to expect from your neck lift recovery here at Gilpin Facial Plastics & Aesthetics.

Keep Your Head Elevated

Keeping your head elevated is the best way to reduce swelling. We recommend propping your head up on a couple of pillows while relaxing (and especially while sleeping). Alternatively, sleep in a recliner to keep yourself upright. If you don’t normally sleep on your back or in an upright position, consider doing so for a week or two ahead of your surgery to adjust.

Wear Appropriate Clothing

Loose and comfortable clothing will help immensely during your recovery. Avoid clothing that needs to be pulled over your head and instead wear items that fasten in the front. It’s important to avoid exacerbating your incisions while dressing and undressing. If you don’t have any appropriate items, consider shopping ahead of your surgery.

Limit Your Activity Level

Allowing your body to rest will ensure a smooth and successful recovery. Although you’ll be instructed to walk around the house and keep your blood moving, plan to put your exercise regimen on hold for at least four weeks. If you do too much too soon, it can compromise your ability to heal, even negatively impacting your results by causing swelling.

Wear Your Neck Band

Wearing a neckband is another essential step in your neck lift recovery. This compression garment reduces swelling and helps the skin to adhere to the new contours. It’s important to wear this as much as possible throughout your recovery. Dr. Gilpin will give you a detailed schedule for when to wear it and when to remove it.

Prepare Your Home for Recovery

Take some time to prepare your home by ensuring you have a comfortable bed or couch you can rest on, along with climate control and materials like sheets, towels, and blankets. In the days before your surgery, make sure to shop for anything you’ll need over the next couple of weeks and prepare some easy-to-grab low sodium meals so you don’t need to cook. Please ensure that your furry friends are not in your recovery area. Finally, stock up on entertainment that you enjoy – but will still allow you to get the rest you need.

Enlist Help Around the House

You’ll be restricted in your activity and ability to lift heavy objects after your surgery. If you have children or pets who will need care, make sure to enlist help from a close friend or family member for the first one to two weeks. This will be especially important in the first day or so since you’ll need monitoring after your procedure. If you can’t arrange for help or you’re from out of town, our team can recommend a professional service.
