Types of Rhinoplasty

Open Rhinoplasty

An open rhinoplasty involves a small incision at the columella (the strip of skin between the nostrils) to allow full access to the nasal skeleton, bone and cartilage, and deep nasal structures.

  • Commonly used for primary rhinoplasty and revision rhinoplasty
  • Initial swelling resolves in 2–3 weeks, with subtle changes maturing over 12 months

Related procedures: Chin augmentation, neck surgery, or eyelid lift

Closed Rhinoplasty

A closed rhinoplasty is performed entirely through internal incisions inside the nasal cavity, avoiding any external scars. This approach is often used for simpler adjustments to the nasal structures without major tip work.

  • Less postoperative swelling compared to the open technique
  • Recovery typically takes 1–2 weeks for swelling to subside

Related procedures: Chin augmentation, neck surgery, or eyelid lift

Revision Rhinoplasty

Revision rhinoplasty (also known as secondary rhinoplasty) addresses concerns or complications from a previous nose job. This additional surgery may correct breathing problems, restore collapsed external nasal valves, or refine aesthetic results.

  • Often more complex due to scar tissue and altered nasal blood supply
  • Recovery is similar in length to primary surgery but may involve more swelling

Specialized Rhinoplasties

Ethnic rhinoplasty techniques are also available, tailored to preserve cultural and ethnic identity while refining nasal shape. When indicated, septoplasty can be performed during surgery to straighten the nasal septum and improve airflow.

  • Is nose job permanent?
A well-performed rhinoplasty by a facial plastic surgeon is expected to be permanent. However, the younger you are when having rhinoplasty, there is a small but increased chance of your nose changing shape with age.
  • Will I be able to go home after my Rhinoplasty?
Yes, after your nose surgery is complete you will be able to go home. Rhinoplasty is usually performed on an outpatient basis. As a caveat, you will still be under the effects of anesthesia after surgery, so you will need a responsible adult to drive you home afterwards. Also, you might want to consider arranging for someone to help you out for a day or two after surgery. This will allow you to relax and maximize your recovery time from rhinoplasty.
