What’s the Best Age for a Deep Plane Facelift?

Posted May 15, 2023 in Facelift

If you’re considering a facelift, you’re probably curious about whether it’s the right time to take the next step. This is a good consideration to have! The “right” age for a facelift will be different for everyone, but there are still some guidelines that make some patients better candidates than others. The deep plane facelift is one of the most advanced facelift techniques available and it comes with some special considerations regarding candidacy and age. Here’s what to know about the deep plane facelift and when it’s the right time to meet with our dual board-certified facial plastic surgeon.

What is a Deep Plane Facelift?

To understand the deep plane facelift, it’s important to understand the process of aging. As we age, the deeper tissues of the face begin to succumb to gravity and collagen loss. Additionally, the skin begins to lose its tight and smooth quality we enjoy when we’re younger. This process can cause the loose and sagging appearance many people seek to correct with a facelift.

The deep plane facelift is one of the newest facelift techniques. Where a traditional facelift simply smooths the skin and gets rid of excess, a deep plane facelift addresses the deeper layers of the face to restore them to their natural youthful position. By resuspending the deeper tissues, this type of facelift can return the face to its original appearance – something not achievable by simply smoothing the skin over top of sagging tissues.

What Age is Best for a Deep Plane Facelift?

This answer can be different for every patient since there are a variety of factors that contribute to the process of aging. If you’ve practiced good skincare and avoided sun damage, for example, you may appear younger for your age and thus you may be older when you begin looking at your facelift options. If you feel that you look older than your actual age, you may undergo a facelift sooner than many other patients.

Generally, deep plane facelift patients are between 45-65 years old. This range means that you’ve begun to experience significant signs of aging but still have good skin elasticity and tone that will respond well to surgery and allow you to maintain your results for years to come. Patients younger than this age range typically haven’t developed moderate to severe signs of aging (and are better candidates for non-surgical treatments or a mini facelift), and patients older than this age range may not have enough skin thickness and elasticity to benefit from a deep plane facelift.

What Can I Include in My Deep Plane Facelift?

While some patients can benefit from a deep plane facelift alone, many patients can benefit more from combining their facial rejuvenation procedure with other surgeries. Some of the most common options include the brow lift, which can smooth and elevate the area above the brows (which is not usually corrected by a facelift). Another excellent option is upper eyelid surgery and/or lower eyelid surgery which can reduce sagging upper eyelids and get rid of sunken undereye bags. These are also areas not typically corrected by a facelift on its own. By also correcting these areas, you can ensure that your whole face matches the transformative results of your deep plane facelift and that you can enjoy your results for the long term.
