Combating the Signs of Aging: How Blepharoplasty Can Help
Posted June 12, 2024 in Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)
When many people think of aging signs, they think of jowls or brow lines. One of the first places that people tend to experience aging, however, is around the eyes. The upper and lower eyelids can sag and wrinkle, giving you an aged or tired look – even if the rest of your face looks young and smooth. Fortunately, blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that can address both of these areas and create a brighter look. Here’s what to know about blepharoplasty and how it can help you look like your best self.
What Causes Aging?
Aging is the result of a couple of factors. The first is the loss of collagen and elastin as you age. Collagen is a connective protein that gives skin its firmness. We have it in ample supply when we’re young. As we age, however, collagen production begins to slow down and the combined loss of elastin makes skin lose its elasticity, becoming thin. Collagen can also break down because of environmental factors like sun damage, smoking, and more.
The second factor of aging in the eye area is volume loss. Throughout life, your skin faces a constant battle with gravity and eventually begins to lose as collagen breaks down and fat pads and muscles fall lower on the face. The result is fine lines, dark circles, and wrinkles, resulting in signs of aging like hollowed eyes, lower brow positioning and excess upper eyelid skin.
Why Non-Surgical Eye Rejuvenation Isn’t Always Enough
There are a variety of great non-surgical options for rejuvenating and lifting the eyes. The Botox or Toxin of your choice brow lift has become an increasingly popular option for patients with a sagging brow that hangs down over the eyes. Some technologies like RF microneedling can produce elastin and stimulate collagen production which mildly tightens the skin. While these are great starting options, they can’t produce the surgical results you want. Because of their delicate nature, non-surgical treatments can’t directly address the upper and lower eyelids, meaning they tend to target the brow and under-eyes with moderate results. When non-surgical treatments no longer produce the results you want, surgery is typically the next step.
How Blepharoplasty Can Help
Blepharoplasty can produce results that non-surgical procedures can’t. It works by getting rid of excess, stretched skin on the upper and lower eyelids, creating a smoother transition from the brow to the eyes. Although non-surgical procedures can achieve some level of tightening, they can’t lift and rejuvenate the deeper tissues which also contribute to sagging or areas where volume loss occurs. Underneath the eyes are fat pads that tend to drop over time, dragging the skin down with it. Blepharoplasty can lift and reposition these fat pads for a smoother, younger look to the midface. Sometimes a brow lift is also combined with this procedure for a more balanced result. In all, eyelid surgery can create a more complete result than non-surgical options alone – and our team can help you maximize your results by combining approaches during a consultation.
