Which Kind of Facelift Should You Choose?

If you’re considering a facelift, you may be surprised to learn that there are many types of facelift with varying techniques. Not every candidate is suited to every type of facelift, and it’s important to choose the technique that best meets your goals and suits the aging signs you want to address. Here, we’ve outlined a few of the types of facelifts that Dr. Gilpin regularly performs.

Deep Plane Facelift

Dr. Gilpin often recommends a deep plane facelift so that his patients can achieve the best possible results. Like traditional facelift methods, the deep plane facelift addresses loose, sagging skin, which softens wrinkles in the lower face and the appearance of jowls. However, a deep plane facelift also works to tighten the muscles of the face, which offers a more completely rejuvenated look. Dr. Gilpin often prefers this technique for its long-lasting results as well. If needed, patients can also benefit from fat reduction and removal of excess skin and banding from the neck with a deep plane facelift.

Limited Incision Facelift

A limited incision facelift is more or less how it sounds—the procedure is less invasive than a full facelift and is completed with fewer and shorter incisions. Patients with more subtle fine lines or wrinkles in the lower portion of their face can benefit from a limited incision facelift. In some cases, candidates prefer this procedure because of shorter incisions, particularly if for whatever reason incisions cannot be concealed within their hairline. The procedure also results in shorter downtime than a traditional or deep plane facelift. However, results are more subtle than other types of facelifts, so patients with more advanced aging signs may not be suited to the limited incision facelift.

Neck Lift

A neck lift is a good option for patients who have wrinkles, banding, “turkey neck,” or jowls and other signs of aging throughout their neck or just below the chin. Often, a neck lift is performed in combination with a facelift to create a balanced and youthful appearance. In addition to removing excess loose skin and tightening the area, a neck lift can refine the jawline by removing excess fat below the chin, improving the appearance of a “double chin.”

Pairing Facelift with Laser Resurfacing

For some patients, a facelift alone doesn’t address all of their signs of aging or concerns. Wrinkles near the eyes, sun spots, or age spots and redness can all be resolved using laser resurfacing paired with their facelift. This combination gives a more comprehensive result and restores a youthful complexion with even tone and texture.
